Political Pink

When the Pussyhat Project begins after the 2016 U.S. presidential elections, the hot pink knitted hat quickly becomes a symbol of support and solidarity for women’s rights and political resistance. While it has since received criticism for being trans-exclusionary, the project garners thousands of social media followers following its launch. By the end of January 2017, an estimated 100,000 people have downloaded the hat’s pattern and embraced the hot pink colour as a political statement. During the 2020 US presidential elections, Actors Sophia Bush, Kerry Washington and Debra Messing are among a host of celebrities wearing hot pink pant suits to cast their ballots. Since then, hot pink has been embraced by the likes of Senator Elizabeth Warren and Nancy Pelosi as a political fashion statement, bringing attention to women’s rights at a time when reproductive rights are under attack.
